Upon conviction, these rogues, guilty of at least one of the 19 crimes, were sentenced to live in Australia, rather than death. The Banished is a tribute to James McNally Wilson (1832-1921). In 1866 Wilson was court martialed for desertion and mutinous conduct and placed aboard the last convict ship to sail to Australia.
