Have you seen the McCormick recipe inspiration spices? They are these neat little cards that have the perfect amount of each spice for the recipes they provide for you. For example, there is a Garlic Lime Fajita pack; it has minced garlic, minced onions, ground cumin, oregano leaves, cilantro leaves, and coarse ground black pepper. Then on the back there is a recipe on how to make Garlic Lime Chicken Fajitas with those spices. The other flavors are Apple & Sage Pork Chops, Quesadilla Casserole, Rosemary Roasted Chicken & Potatoes, Shrimp & Pasta Primavera, and Spanish Chicken Skillet.
Cheesy Spinach Bread
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
1 tsp olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
4 cups fresh spinach
1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
1 (8 oz) pkg Food Club Fat-Free Cream Cheese, softened
1/2 cup 2% mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 (8 oz) can refrigerated crescent rolls
Preheat oven to 375° F. In a skillet, add olive oil, garlic and spinach; cook until spinach begins to wilt. In a large bowl, combine spinach and cheese; mix well. Roll out crescent roll dough onto a cookie sheet and make a crust with the edges of the dough. Spread cheese mixture over crescent roll dough and place in oven. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Hatch Chili Pepper Season is almost here! I am told that the small town of Hatch, New Mexico turns into a pretty big city during the Hatch Chili Pepper Festival!
The folks at Wikipedia.com note that this small city of about 2,000 residents or so swells about fifteen times to about 30,000 during Labor Day weekend! Is it any wonder that this city is known as the home of “The World’s Best Chili Pepper?”
If you are familiar with Hatch Peppers, or for some reason you are not, let me share some info with you from the Hatch Valley Chile Festival web site. It seems that just one fresh medium-sized chili pod has as much Vitamin C as six oranges! Also, hot chili peppers burn calories by triggering a thermodynamic burn in the body, which speeds up metabolism. Now that’s pretty cool (actually hot)!
Having said all of this, we want to let you know that we will have Fresh Baked Hatch Chili Pepper Focaccia Bread available in our bakeries around August 1st. We’ve sent the recipe out to our Bakery Managers who will begin the process of baking this really fun bread in our bakeries.

One of the newest craze in food right now is Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is creamier and richer than regular yogurt. Compared to other yogurts, Greek yogurt has a higher amount of protein while having a lower amount of carbohydrates and fat.
When buying Greek yogurt the wisest choice, if you’re watching your weight, is get the plain yogurt, with no flavor, and add your own fruit or even honey. But if you like a little flavor added to your yogurt you can buy that too. Dannon Greek yogurt actually has fruit at the bottom of its container and it makes a great morning snack.

4 slices Oscar Mayer Fully Cooked Bacon
4 slices whole grain bread, toasted
2 Tbs Kraft Sandwich Shop Horseradish Dijon Flavored Reduced Fat Mayonnaise
6 slices Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved Smoked Ham
6 slices Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved Oven Roasted Turkey Breast
1 tomato, cut into 4 slices
2 lettuce leaves
Heat bacon as directed on package.
Spread toast slices with reduced fat mayonnaise.
Fill with bacon and remaining ingredients to make 2 sandwiches.
Seasons change and so do my choices of spices and herbs. I go through periods of time that I pick one spice or herb and that is all I want to use. I have gone through many different flavors but right now my herb of choice is Rosemary. I have been putting it on everything, potatoes, carrots, and chicken. Rosemary has a sweet aroma, but you do not want to crush it; crushing it will allow flavor loss.
How long has it been since you’ve had a Spudnut? If it’s been awhile, we’re happy to announce that we now carry them in our bakeries! If you have never tried a Spudnut, or for that matter, haven’t heard of them – let’s talk about them for a moment.
According to the folks at Wikipedia.com, “Spudnut Shops were a franchised chain of stores selling potato flour donuts called Spudnuts.” While that franchise is long gone, we now offer a dozen count boxes of Tasty Bakery Spudnuts from one of our suppliers. This begs the question, “What is a Spudnut made of?” Simply put, it is typically a donut that is sometimes made from mashed potatoes or potato starch, or in the case of the spudnuts we carry, largely from potato flour – rather than everyday standard flour. This difference creates a donut with a distinct taste all its own and is a nice change if you’re looking for something new or novel in the world of donuts.
We hope the next time you are looking for a fun treat to take to a summer picnic event; you try some of our Spudnuts. These are available in all of our stores and we’ll most likely be offering some promotions on them from time-to-time.
Have you noticed the new Leigh Oliver dips? They are very delicious and can be used for more than just a dip. My personal favorite is the Spinach Queso with red ripe tomatoes.
You can eat this as a dip with your favorite tortilla chip or what I love to do with the Queso is to drizzle it over some baked chicken… delicious!

Every Sunday after church, my family gets together for dinner. We fix a variety of food, but my all time favorite meal is baked chicken, greens, sweet potatoes and cornbread. Normally my mom fixes the meals, but I had the desire to cook a couple of weeks ago, so what did I cook? My favorite meal… When my mom cooks greens, she gets the fresh one from the produce department, where she has to clean them, cut them and cook them until they are tender. I wasn’t about to do all of that, so I made a trip to my nearby Brookshire’s, where I found Glory Greens. I poured the cans of preseasoned greens into a pot and let them cook for about 15-30 minutes and Viola, they were done and they were umm-umm good!! We invited some friends over, and my Greens were a hit. They could not believe how delicious they were… I chuckled and said Glory greens don’t need any help…
A catch phrase that is often floated when we talk about great tasting foods is ‘scratch made.’ This phrase is believed to have originated from the British, so say the folks at phrases.org. They go on to note that when ‘scratch’ is used in say, cooking – it means using ordinary ingredients that have not been pre-mixed or specially processed. Probably everyone loves talking about that special cake recipe that someone in their family made on special occasions that was, yes, made from scratch. The taste, texture and most importantly – the flavor, was something that didn’t taste – ‘store bought,’ (another widely used phrase).
Since we operate almost 150 bakeries – in grocery stores, we sell lots of ‘store bought’ cakes (and they’re really good!) However, we set about the task of offering a ‘scratch’ made cake that was also ‘all natural.’ (I talked about all-natural in my blog posting in May) We were fortunate enough to partner with a bakery in Oakland, California that makes their cakes will all-natural ingredients that are baked from ‘scratch’ – no mixes or bases, just ingredients!
The end result of our journey to offer some scratch-made cakes was four very flavorful varieties! We now have Chocolate, Lemon, Mocha, and my all-time absolute favorite – Carrot! As an aside, the Carrot Cake has an awesome cheese cream icing, tons of carrots, butter, walnuts and vanilla extract – making what is one – oh so good cake! The other flavors are off the charts as well, but in case I didn’t mention it – the carrot is incredible! I invite you to stop by one of our bakeries and try a scratch cake – from one of our stores, which by the way, are a fun place to shop.
