Because History Matters Scholarship Information and General Application

In honor of Black History Month, Brookshire Grocery Company presents the “Because History Matters” Scholarship Program. The intent of this program is to pay special homage to Black History Month as well as provide an opportunity for students within our market areas to receive tuition assistance in support of education.

Scholarship Awards:  First Place $5,000; Second Place $3,000; Third Place $1,500

Deadline:  Applications must be received by February 23, 2018 at 5:00 PM.  Winners will be notified on March 21st , 2018, or after.

About the Scholarship:
This scholarship is open to any graduating high school senior attending high school in Texas, Louisiana or Arkansas and planning to start college in the fall of 2018.

Winners will receive the prized amounts toward their continued hard work as an undergraduate student at a junior college, four-year institution or an accredited technical college. Three scholarships will be awarded to students within our markets in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. First place will receive $5,000, second place will receive $3,000, and third place will receive $1,500.

Scholarship winners will be contacted to present themselves at their local Brookshire’s, Spring Market or Super 1 Foods store to have their picture taken and receive a plaque.

Brookshire Grocery Company’s employee-partners and immediate family members must apply for the partner version of this scholarship.

Awards will be sent to the Financial Aid office of the scholarship winner’s school of choice.

Any scholarship funds not used for the intended purpose will be refunded to Brookshire Grocery Company.


  • Must fill out the scholarship application in its entirety.
  • Must submit an essay with a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 1,000 words.
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Must be currently enrolled as a high school senior anticipating a high school diploma.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. junior college, four-year institution’s undergraduate program or technical college by the fall of 2018.
  • Must live within the market areas of Brookshire’s, Spring Market and Super 1 Foods stores in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
  • Entry must be the student’s original essay.
  • Must have exemplary character and leadership skills.
  • Brookshire Grocery Company’s partners and immediate family members must apply for the partner version of this scholarship.

Incomplete applications will not be considered for this scholarship.
