Applesauce is such a delicious snack to have, especially when the applesauce is cold. Did you know that you can substitute applesauce for oil in a recipe? It is ideal to use unsweetened applesauce but if that is not what you have then sweetened is just fine. If you are using sweetened applesauce, just make sure that you reduce the sugar so you do not get a super sweet surprise. You can start by using a little applesauce and the remainder oil, doing half applesauce and half oil, or you can go all the way and use all applesauce. All you have to do is match the applesauce to oil, so if a recipe calls for 1 cup of oil just add 1 cup of applesauce. This substitute is not great for everything but it works for cake, muffin, and bread recipes. Why would you do this? Well when you substitute the applesauce for oil you are reducing the amount of fat which results in lower calories.
