Ingredients
1/2 beef brisket (4 to 5 lbs), trimmed
1 (1 oz) pkg onion soup mix
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp ground black pepper, divided
4 cloves garlic, halved
1 cup beef broth
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 Tbs Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp mustard powder
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
Directions
  1. Rub the brisket with onion soup mix, salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Add the meat and garlic to the slow cooker. In a bowl, whisk together the remaining ingredients. Pour into slow cooker. Cover, and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours until brisket is tender to slice but not falling apart.
  2. Transfer brisket to a baking sheet. Heat oven to 400° F. Strain the liquid from slow cooker into a saucepan. Bring the sauce to a low boil. Cook for 20 minutes, or until it reduces by half and begins to thicken to a syrup consistency.
  3. Place brisket in oven, and cook for 15 minutes. Turn oven to broil. Brush brisket with sauce. Place under the broiler for 5 minutes. Brush the brisket again. Broil for 5 more minutes. Remove from oven. Slice thinly against the grain. Skim the fat from top of sauce. Serve the sauce with the brisket.
