2009 Spirit of Christmas Food Drive


Donations to the 28th annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive are still being accepted as the drive moves into its final weeks.

The goal is to feed 16,000 families in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The food drive is sponsored by Brookshire Grocery Company and various service organizations.

“Many families receive assistance through this effort, and every single donation counts,” said Sam Anderson, director of consumer and community relations for BGC.

Donations may be made by placing non-perishable food items in designated bins inside participating stores before Christmas. Items needed include canned meats, vegetables, soups, beans, rice, and pasta, among others.

BGC will give at least one baking hen to each family assisted by the drive. In 2008, the company provided more than 16,000 hens. Food drive officials expect to provide the same or more this year.

Volunteers will gather, sort, box, and distribute the food before Christmas. Anderson said the drive targets those most in need, especially the elderly and single-parent households. Recipients are screened by local relief organizations or government agencies to verify degree of need.

Best Company in Texas 2010


Brookshire Grocery Co. has been named one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas 2010.
  
The program is a project of Texas Monthly, Texas Association of Business (TAB), Texas State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (TSC-SHRM) and Best Companies Group. BGC has made the list each year since the program was created in 2006. 
  
This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Texas, benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses. The Best Companies to Work for in Texas 2010 list is made up of 85 companies. 

“Our people are great,” said BGC President and Chief Executive Officer Rick Rayford. “Our success as a company is directly attributable to the phenomenal people who work in our stores, manufacturing and distribution facilities and corporate and regional offices every day.”
  
Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Companies to Work for in Texas. 
  
Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Texas and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.
  
BGC will be recognized at the Best Companies to Work for in Texas awards ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at the Texas Association of Business 2010 Annual Conference. The final rankings will be announced at the luncheon.

Truck Drivers Join Million-Mile Club


Two Brookshire’s truck drivers from the company’s Tyler Distribution Center recently completed one million miles driven without a preventable accident.

David Slayter, a 24-year employee, hit the mark on Oct. 6 at mile-marker 196 near New Boston, Texas, while Steve Tucker, a 13-year employee, reached the milestone on Oct. 15 at mile-marker 614 near Marshall, Texas. They are BGC’s eleventh and twelfth million-mile drivers, respectively.

The company celebrated with a hamburger lunch for the drivers, who will receive a customized ring as a memento of the occasion.

“We cannot overemphasize what this accomplishment means for a truck driver,” said Scott Reily, vice president-logistics for BGC. “We are fortunate to have a group of drivers who have achieved this, but it is very special for each individual who crosses that millionth mile. It also shows that our entire logistics team is supporting drivers behind the scenes, helping ensure we operate safely and efficiently.”

Forney’s Looking Good!


Since March, BGC has been renovating and expanding the Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy located at 427 Pinson Road in Forney, Texas, and on October 28 the company will officially begin the grand reopening of the 36,200-square-foot store.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the 28th will celebrate results of work that has given the store an additional 2,200 square feet of space, a new facade of brick, stone and stucco that also provides for additional natural lighting, polished concrete flooring, new interior paint and décor, a multitude of new cases, shelves and coolers, and an upgraded pharmacy drive-through.

During the grand reopening the store will sponsor a $3,000 giveaway with 30 lucky Thank You Card customers randomly selected to win a $100 gift card. Special events planned include a Halloween costume contest for children on October 28 and a Ritz NASCAR display on October 31, among others.

The store will carry more than 1,200 specialty and natural/organic items and will feature new service meat and seafood departments, as well as expanded bakery, produce, deli and floral departments. Other features will include two self-checkout lanes, 16 specialty sections, a new seating area and two movie rental machines. The store will be more energy efficient with automated electronic refrigeration and lighting control systems. 

The store will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Retail Leader Accepts New Role


David Pike, formerly store director at Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy in Rockwall, Texas, has been named store director at the newly remodeled and expanded store in Forney, Texas.

Pike joined the company in 1995 as a courtesy clerk in Chandler, Texas. Pike went on to serve as grocery manager and then assistant store manager, working at stores in Van, Tyler and Athens, all in Texas.

In 2007 he was promoted to store director in Rockwall.

Manufacturing Operations Recognized!


The company’s dairy plant recently captured a first-place award at the 2009 World Dairy Expo Championship with Food Club Whole Chocolate Milk. The company’s ice cream plant took third place in the orange sherbet class and blueberry yogurt class with its Food Club brand. Products were judged on overall quality related to texture, appearance, flavor and taste with some being judged on bacteria content and melting point, as well. The event drew more than 65,000 dairy enthusiasts, producers, industry personnel and visitors from around the world for world-class cattle shows and the biggest dairy trade show on earth.

Also, BGC’s dairy and ice cream plants recently received the Superior Worker Safety Award from the International Dairy Foods Association. According to the IDFA, the purpose of the program is to recognize processing facilities and trucking operations that demonstrate excellence in safety based on safety records from the past year. All BGC manufacturing facilities completed fiscal 2009 with no lost time injuries.

Shop & Save Bonus Days!


Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy stores are offering customers a chance to save up to 20 percent off a future grocery bill between October 7th and November 10th in the Shop & Save Bonus Days program when spending $700.

Customers may earn up to two 20% off coupons during the promotion. Once a cardholder reaches the 20 percent mark, the coupon will be printed at the bottom of the customer’s register receipt.

Also, the stores will offer savings for five, ten and 15 percent off when customers spend $200, $300 and $500, respectively, during the 5 week promotion period.

Officials note while certain purchases are excluded, pharmacy purchases will count toward the spending incentives.

More than 125 Brookshire Grocery locations to launch multi-faceted in-store program as sport’s focus turns to the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup

September 30, 2009 (Daytona Beach, Fla.) – As race fans gear up for the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup – the sport’s 10-race playoff shootout – shoppers at more than 125 Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy locations across Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi can get close to the action with a wide range of in-store activities rewarding them with savings on products from official NASCAR partners, a valuable NASCAR Sprint Cup ticket offer, and the opportunity to win a trip the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion’s Week in Las Vegas.

In addition, customers purchasing the official NASCAR products will have the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes to win a trip to Las Vegas for NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series Champions Week, where they will experience special VIP events and interact with NASCAR drivers and celebrity guests.  Consumers also have the opportunity to win NASCAR prizes by creatively utilizing the partner products in the “Store Director’s Display Contest,” a competition for the best store display.
