Juneteenth

From its Galveston, Texas, origin in 1865, the observance of June 19 as the African American Emancipation Day has spread throughout the U.S. and beyond.

It commemorates freedom, education and achievement and is a time marked with picnics, speakers, music, stories, and family gatherings.

BGC employees have been involved in Juneteenth for years and recently a group dished out hot dogs, hot links, water, watermelon and other snacks to 3,000-plus celebrants in East Texas.

As one volunteer put it, “It’s ‘our day’ to reflect on our heritage and teach kids about all we’ve accomplished. I get very emotional participating in the parade and seeing everyone come together with smiles and excitement all around.”

Every kid loves a big bowl of cereal, right?

Thanks to Brookshire’s stores in Pine Bluff, Ark., more less-fortunate kids and their families won’t have to skip breakfast this summer.

In the 10th annual Summer Cereal Drive our stores and employees collected and donated 7,400 boxes of cereal and $650 to benefit the Arkansas Foodbank Network. Way to go, gang!

Just one more thing…pass the milk, please!

Summer in the City

Well, okay…we weren’t in a city like the one Lovin’ Spoonful describes in their classic hit song…but June 11 was definitely a hot time in Tyler, Texas.

Sixty volunteers from BGC braved near triple digit temperatures to help United Way agencies in the annual Day of Caring.

We planted sod, worked in flowerbeds, painted rooms and worked on playground equipment, and best of all the only things broken were a good sweat and maybe a manicured nail or two. I personally went through about a dozen bottles of water before the day was over. When the dust settled it felt good knowing we contributed to neighbors who help neighbors. The United Way rallied more than 400 volunteers this year to tackle nearly 40 projects in Tyler alone.

Good Times

It was great to spend time again with the folks at Children’s Miracle Network at their annual telethon broadcast on CBS 19 TV in Tyler on Sunday, June 6. From the staff and volunteers to the children such as David Shelley and Taylor Ross, “miracle children” who are here today thanks in part to the work of CMN, it was smiles and laughter mixed with tears of joy as the generous spirit of East Texas came through with $600,000 in pledges. A group of us from Tyler and Troup helped at the phone bank and presented a check for $120,000, a portion of funds raised at Brookshire’s Benefit Golf Tournament in April. CMN is one of many, many nonprofit organizations our company gives to annually, and we are blessed to be able to help others around us.

Yee-Haw!

Dust off your ropers, friends, cause the rodeo is comin’ to town. Folks are getting ready for the Gladewater Round-Up at the rodeo grounds starting at 8:15 each night, June 9-12. Look for Brookshire’s Store Director Gene Walker in the Rotary Club concession stand and watch him hand over a $500 scholarship to a deserving student on Thursday night. With a party, parade, cook-off and live music — it makes me want to saddle up and ride on over!

Share The Road

Sometimes we get behind the wheel of our car and ignore the two-wheeled travelers on our busy streets and roads. Well, some cyclists are trying to raise awareness about the number of bikers who are injured and killed. A group of more than 60 cyclists held a memorial service at the Brookshire’s store in Willow Park on May 19, as well as a “Ride In Silence” that took the riders down Ranch House Road to an I-20 access road and back. The Willow Park police and fire departments even gave the group an escort across the route that took participants past a spot where two cyclists had been killed because of motorist negligence. It’ll make me think twice when I’ve kicked it into overdrive and see a biker up ahead.

Knock Knock Knock

Well, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is officially in East Texas, in Mineola to be exact. Let the fun, even with a lack of sleep, begin…..24/7 coffee I.V. please!

Mike and Katrina Carr and their four adopted children of Mineola were, I’m sure, as surprised as they ever have been this morning when Ty Pennington and his design team knocked on their door to notify them that they were the chosen ones to receive a new home.  Now, let the construction begin.

The family is being sent packing to Hawaii this afternoon so that the weeklong fury of tearing down their existing home and building a brand new one from scratch can begin.

Can’t wait to see the progress throughout the week!

Extreme Makeover….Boot Scootin’ Through Texas

Hopefully most of us know by now a little bit about the ABC hit show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”, because it’s about to be as big as Texas, in East Texas!!

The reality show, which focuses on home renovations and construction for deserving families, is heading to East Texas to surprise one family with a complete home makeover. But, mums the word on just who this lucky family is, and I know we all can’t wait to find out all about them next week!

All the frenzy began yesterday with a pep rally held at Green Acres Baptist Church. The magical “door knock” happens next Thursday, Feb 25th, when Ty Pennington and the design team surprise the family and send them packing on a trip while their new home is built in just SEVEN days! (I wonder where ABC will send this family? I hope somewhere warm, so I can be there in spirit) Then, the most exciting moment will happen Thursday, March 4th, when everyone welcomes the family back to their new home by yelling “MOVE THAT BUS!”

Building a house in just 7 days is a remarkable feat. But with all the overwhelming support coming from all of our BGC partners in addition to the many hundred community volunteers, we will be able to welcome the winning family home in no time. BGC has over 90 partners that have committed to help, not including many of you that are volunteering through the local builder, Gary Bayless (he created a site specifically for volunteering + info on this project: http://www.baylessextrememakeover.com). Plus, BGC is donating food during one of the construction days and we will have one of our reefer trucks parked on the home site for the week….isn’t that cool?! We aren’t just helping one family; we’re all coming together to support the community that has supported us, BGC, for so many years.

Now….let’s start practicing our yells to “MOVE THAT BUS!”
