Work whole grains into your diet.

You’ve heard it everywhere: Whole grains are an important part of your diet. They’re the “good carbs,” and we all need to eat more of them. Here’s a bit of good news: The Brookshire’s Bakery is a perfect place to find whole grain breads, rolls and other goodies for your family.
Whole grains, as well as beans, vegetables and fruits make up the complex, good carbohydrates. Just as the name says, they’re whole grains—the entire grain without any parts stripped away. During traditional grain milling, the fiber-rich outer layers and the nutrient-rich inner germ are removed. With whole grains, everything is left intact. Whole grains are digested slowly, gradually delivering natural sugars as a steady source of energy throughout the day. They make us feel fuller sooner and longer, and that keeps us from grabbing an extra snack before dinnertime. Complex carbohydrates are naturally rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals that keep us healthy. Whole grains have been shown to significantly reduce risks of cancer, heart disease, digestive disorders and Type-2 diabetes.
It’s not too hard, then, to see why whole grains are so good for you. There’s one catch, though: if whole grains don’t taste great, you’re not going to eat them, are you? Many times, whole grain bread products are heavy, dull and tasteless. That really takes away the motivation to have at least 3 servings a day, doesn’t it?
Once again, The Brookshire's bakery is here to save the day. Stop by and get a free taste of our whole grain products. Have a slice of rye bread, a piece of wheat focaccia or a multigrain dinner roll. You’ll see for yourself that eating healthy can be scrumptious!
To help get your 3 servings of whole grains every day:
- Have some wholegrain toast for breakfast, a sandwich made with whole wheat bread for lunch (2 slices = 2 servings!) and some multigrain rolls at dinnertime.
- Enjoy wholegrain cereals for breakfast
- Try wholegrain pasta
- Cut out bite-sized shapes of wholegrain bread with cookie cutters. Add cream cheese, peanut butter or fruit spread for snacks.
- Nibble on wholegrain granola or cereal during the day.
