What a Peach!
August is National Peach Month.

Here's a brain teaser: What popular fruit comes from china, belongs to the rose family, and has a stone in the center?
It's a peach.
Most people call seed pit in the middle a pit, but farmers refer to it as a stone. In fact, peaches are classified as stone fruit, for that very reason.
Peaches, and their very-close cousins, nectarines, can have white, yellow or reddish flesh, and come in freestone and clingstone varieties. Just as those terms imply, freestone peaches separate from the stone easily, while clingstones…..cling.
Nectarines are a bit smaller than peaches, they're less fuzzy, and they often have more of that wonderful peachy aroma. Nectarines are also higher in nutrition (more Vitamin A, C and potassium).
Peaches are available frozen and canned all year round, but now is the time to look for ripe, fresh peaches in the produce section. You can tell they're ripe when you sniff one near the stem end. If it smells like a peach, it's ready!
Slice or dice peaches (or nectarines) and stir them into just about any food for a sweet yet tangy blast. Consider adding them to:
- Yogurt or cottage cheese
- Tossed green salad
- Ice cream
- Apple sauce
- Pancake or muffin batter
- Salsa
Grilled Peaches
A Brookshire's Best Recipe
6 peaches
3 Tbs lemon juice
1/2 cup sherry vinegar or balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar
Halve the peaches and remove the pits. Drizzle with about 2 teaspoons of the lemon juice. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside.
Combine the remaining lemon juice, vinegar and brown sugar in a small bowl or measuring cup.
Place the peaches cut-side down on a hot, lightly oiled grill. Cover and cook for about 2 minutes, or until there are grill marks. Turn over and baste the cut sides with the vinegar mixture. Cover the grill and cook for about 3 more minutes, or until softened.
