What fruits and vegetables are the healthiest ones? It all depends on who you ask. A Department of Agriculture survey asked 500 registered dieticians to list their top choices, and you may be surprised at what they said!
The Top Five Fruits:
- Watermelon: lots of vitamin C and beta-carotene, plenty of fiber and low in calories
- Papaya: plenty of vitamin C and beta-carotene, great source of potassium and fiber
- Orange: Famous for vitamin C and beta-carotene, and plenty of fiber if you eat the whole fruit instead of just the juice.
- Grapefruit: Vitamin C and carotenoids, good amount of fiber, pectin and phytochemicals.
- Apricots: full of beta-carotene, potassium and fiber, as well a vitamin C
The Top Five Vegetables
- Spinach: beta-carotene, vitamin C, folate, iron, potassium and calcium bonanza!
- Sweet Potatoes: lots of potassium, vitamin C, beta-carotene and fiber
- Collard Greens: excellent source for beta-carotene, vitamin C, folate, calcium and fiber.
- Carrots: loads of beta-carotene and fiber.
- Red Bell Pepper: a great source of vitamin C, beta-carotene and fiber.
