Setting the Dinner Table

Setting the Dinner TableJust a generation ago a child could set the table without hesitation. Now, some parents aren’t sure which side of the plate a fork goes on. Whether you’re 8 or 80, it’s always good to know how to properly set the table.

Don’t worry about all the fancy stuff; these are the very basics of table setting. This is something easy enough kids that can learn it and you can get the whole family involved in dinnertime again. For a simple family dinner you need just a few items: plate, napkin, knife, fork, spoon and glass.

Start with the plate. If it has a pattern, make sure it is right side up. Place the napkin to the left of the plate with the fork on top of it. The knife is placed next to the plate on its right side with the blade facing the plate. Place the spoon to the right of the knife. The drinking glass is placed above the knife and spoon and slightly higher than the plate.

It’s that easy. In a time where we eat on the run and use our dining room table for folding laundry, it’s nice to pause and make time to have a family dinner together around the table. Get into a routine of preparing dinner and setting the table together as a family.
