Brookshire Grocery Co. has been committed to material recycling efforts for a number of years in many areas of our business.
Response and participation in our recent introduction of materials collection at our retail stores has been tremendous.
In 2007 and 2008 Brookshire Grocery Co. Recycled:
- 41,500 Tons of Cardboard, which helped to save 705,500 trees, 290.5 million gallons of water, and 273,900 cubic yards of landfill.
- 360 Tons of Plastic, which combined with cardboard, saved over 173,880 gallons of oil. We also saved 2,664 cubic yards of landfill through plastic recycling.
- 210 Tons of Office Paper, which is equivalent to saving over 6,120 trees, 2.5 million gallons of water, and 1,188 cubic yards of landfill.
- Other items currently recycled include meat scraps, bone, cooking grease, motor oils, and aluminum products. We are also evaluating other materials to introduce into our recycling program in an effort to reduce the amount sent to landfills.
