Recycling Efforts

Recycling EffortsBrookshire Grocery Co. has been committed to material recycling efforts for a number of years in many areas of our business.

Response and participation in our recent introduction of materials collection at our retail stores has been tremendous.

In 2009, Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC) collected 360 tons of plastic. This includes shrink wrap, plastic bags, and PET #1 bottles. Every store has recycle bins out in front for customers to drop off their plastic bags and PET #1 bottles.

BGC has also collected and recycled 201 tons of paper. There are bins for these commodities placed throughout our corporate offices that provide our employees a place to recycle of junk mail, magazines, phone books, etc. We also collect and send scraps from our Print Shop.

Overall, including cardboard, Brookshire Grocery Company recycled a total of 20,000 tons in 2009! That is the equivalent of 63,000 cubic yards of landfill, 321,000 trees, and 3,000 barrels of oil.
