Make your homemade foods healthier!

We want to eat healthier. Sometimes big changes are hard to get used to—especially for the rest of the family—but little tweaks to the routine can almost go unnoticed. Substituting tofu for chicken at the dinner table might get a big reaction, but there are some other changes that are likely to be well received.

There are a few tricks to cooking light that nobody will notice because the flavor isn't affected. See which ones you can add to your family's diet!

  • Choose whole grain products when possible for pasta, bread, rice and flour.
  • Use light mayonnaise instead of regular.
  • Pick reduced-fat cheese and other dairy products.
  • Use a reduced-fat salad dressing on lettuce.
  • Use extra-lean meats, skinless poultry, less-fat bacon bits instead of higher-fat versions.
  • Add extra vegetables to soups, stews, salads and other foods.
  • Always look for reduced-fat or lower-calorie packaged ingredients when cooking.
  • Put out a fruit-and-veggie tray for snacking, instead of chips and crackers.
