We all like to pet the cute dog in the park, but does the dog like it too? Have you even learned how to properly meet a new dog? There are etiquette rules for this, just like when meeting people.
Ask the owner's permission to pet the dog. Most owners say yes. However, some dogs don’t like strangers or children. If the owner says no, leave the dog alone.
Ask the dog's permission. We often forget that a dog has its own opinion. Slowly extend your hand so that the dog can sniff the back of your hand. Don’t immediately make eye contact with the dog.
Dogs see this as a threat. If the dog sniffs your hand and wags his tail, that’s a definite yes. If the dog growls, retreats behind his owner, or backs up, that’s a no. If the owner and dog have given you permission, rub the dog on the neck, under the chin or on the belly. Dogs have a blind spot on the top of their head, so they are reluctant to let you put your hand there.
