Circuit Training

You hear about it all the time: circuit training. But what is it? Really, it's a fancy term for a series. When you work out on a circuit training cycle, you do a series of exercises, rather than just one. A circuit pretty much means that you’re working out and moving from one workout directly into the next. Circuit training can be adapted to suit just about everyone and is especially good for those who are short on time. Circuit training is great for muscle toning and weight loss.

Another advantage of circuit training is that you are free to explore a combination of exercises and customize your own workout, whether you like to train at home, at the gym or even outdoors.

All you need for a circuit is a step and a set of dumbbells….and both of those can be improvised with household items. For a fast paced, full-body workout, try this:

  • Bicep curls
  • Stepping for 1 minute
  • Triceps kickbacks
  • Stepping for 1 minute
  • Lunges
  • Stepping for 1 minute
  • Squats
  • Stepping for 1 minute
  • Shoulder press
  • Stepping for 1 minute
  • Bent over dumbbell rows
  • Stepping for 1 minute
  • Bench press
  • Stepping for 1 minute

This workout takes approximately 15 minutes for beginners, provided that you complete 1-minute rounds. When you progress to 2-minute rounds, your workout time will double to 30 minutes.

* Remember to use moderately light weights as you will need to perform as many repetitions as possible in 1-2 minutes. Beginners should ideally start with 1-minute rounds and progress to 2-minute rounds.
