For Your Family

Biting Means Teething

Biting Means TeethingIs your baby biting everything in sight? That's a likely indication of teething—either the first one or successive ones. Don't get upset with your baby if he or she bites you. Instead, give them something else to gnaw on.

Here are some ideas:

Popsicle: Try homemade freezer pops, so that you can control the ingredients. Try diluted apple juice. The cold soothes sore gums and the firm texture gives a baby something to sink his teeth into.

Frozen bagel or banana: Always supervise to guard against accidental choking

Teething biscuits: Teething cookies are wonderful, and you can make homemade ones, too. Just don't overdo them—the starches can lead to tooth decay.

Cold bottle of water: the cool water is good for babies, and it helps numb their pain at the same time.

Cold spoon: Babies like the feeling of a cold spoon, but bend the handle so they can't hurt themselves.

Teething ring: Teethers are great for sore gums, especially when kept in the fridge. Try to find a textured one that only contains water.

Wash cloth: Keep some wet washcloths in the freezer in a plastic bag. When your baby is teething, just take the washcloth out and let them chew on one for fast relief.
