Better Sandwiches

Who doesn't like sandwiches? Think of them as a palette to create your own original edible artwork! The challenge is to prepare a sandwich that is tasty, full of nutrition, but not full of extra fat and calories.

Consider these suggestions:

  • Lean meats like ham, turkey, roast beef and grilled chicken are good choices.
  • Cheese adds calcium and protein, but it's about 100 calories a slice. Consider reduced-fat varieties.
  • Add extra vegetables, such as extra lettuce and tomatoes, and even cucumber and pepper slices. They add flavor and nutrition with minimal calories and no fat.
  • Reduced-fat mayo has 50 calories a tablespoon. Regular mayo has twice as much!
  • Yellow mustard has 3 calories per tablespoon, so heap it on! Honey mustard has 50, though.
  • Try a bottled fat-free salad dressing instead of mayo to add flavor with far fewer calories.
  • Go with whole-grain breads for more fiber and nutrition. Keep bun size smaller to keep calories under control.
