BGC Wins Award in National Chilean Fruit DisplayTEXARKANA, TEXAS--Finding fresh summer fruit in the dead of winter may have come as a bit of a surprise to some customers last year — but theirs was no where near the surprise Larry Evans had when he learned of his first place, $2,500 award in the national Chilean Fresh Fruit Display contest.

“I just got the check this morning,” Larry beamed on Aug. 28, after winners were announced in late July. He serves as produce manager at the Super 1 Foods store in Texarkana, Texas.

“I never imagined that I would win first place in a contest like this that was going on all over the country,” Larry said, noting that he was excited to have won $50 in a scratch-off portion of the contest just for entering.

Grand prize in the contest — which was held to promote that Chile’s fresh peaches, plums, nectarines and other fruit are available in winter — was an all-expense-paid trip for two to Chile valued at $10,000. Larry was one of the five $2,500 first-place winners from as many geographic regions, with his display beating out others in eight states spanning from New Mexico to Tennessee.

Basic guidelines were to build and photograph a display using only fruit that could be identified as Chilean and to mention or use Chilean Fresh Fruit Display logos and materials.

“This is a great honor for Larry and our company to have a display selected as one of the top in the nation,” said Pete Leung, vice president-perishable operations. “We’re very proud of Larry’s effort and congratulate him on this big award.”
