As May 5—cinco de mayo—approaches, you may get the urge to cook foods with a Mexican flair. That's not hard!
There's a lot more to Mexican cuisine than spicy tomatoes…so consider adding a few ingredients to your recipes that will give them a Mexican flair—at cinco de mayo or anytime.
These ingredients are the staples of Mexican cooking. Pick up a couple of these key items next time you're at the grocery store and you'll be prepared for an easy, healthy dinner whenever the mood for Mexican strikes!
- Green, red, and yellow bell peppers
- Chile peppers (including poblano and jalapeño)
- Garlic
- Onions (regular and green)
- Sliced black olives
- Monterey Jack and/or Cheddar cheese, shredded
- Sour cream (light or non-fat for the health conscious)
- Flour and corn tortillas
- Ground beef (extra lean, if you wish)
