A Kitchen Dress CodeRules, rules, rules. Every time you turn around, there's another rule to follow. Most rules are made to help keep you safe, of course, and in the kitchen it's no exception. What are the rules for safe dressing when cooking?

            • Wear shoes with flat soles to minimize falls and help you maintain your balance. Leather uppers with closed toes protect from burns; cloth shoes absorb spilled liquids and prolong burning.
            • Cover arms and legs for protection, and don't wear leggings; they absorb hot liquids spilled on them. It is important to wear clothes that are comfortable and easily cleaned.
            • Be careful of long dangling jewelry; it can get caught in kitchen equipment.

  • Keep your hair under control, for two reasons. Besides keeping hair out of prepared foods, you should also remember that hair is flammable.
  • Long nails are dangerous in a kitchen; they harbor germs and interfere with safe knife use.
  • Avoid reaching over the stovetop when cooking and watch your sleeves.
