Specialty cupcakes are the rage now. So why not indulge yourself, with our brand-new Cupcakes of the Month.

Our bakeries have come up with delicious new cupcake flavors that we’ll feature each month in a 6-cupcake container, perfect for family or office. And we’ve launched this new offering this month with a terrific flavor – Snickerdoodle, available in our fresh bakery departments. (And they’re at a special price this week, starting today!)

Remember when Mom baked those wonderful, cinnamon-sugar cookies we called Snickerdoodles? Well, we’ve recreated that flavor, in a cupcake. These delicious moist white cupcakes are topped with a cinnamon-flavored cream cheese icing and topped with cinnamon crumbs. Great for dessert, or a snack.

Every month this year, our Cupcake of the Month program will bring you a new flavor, unique to our bakeries. So check out our menu and see what you have to look forward to this year:

March – German Chocolate Cupcake – A delicious moist chocolate cupcake topped with a generous portion of our delicious German chocolate icing. A perfect ending to a great meal.

April – Cream Cheese Coconut Cupcake – A moist white cupcake topped with our delicious cream cheese icing topped with white coconut. Perfect for a spring picnic dessert.

May – Triple Chocolate Fudge Cupcake – A chocolate cupcake topped with our fudge icing. We then add chocolate chips and a fudge icing drizzle to create this chocolate lovers treat.

June – Strawberry Shortcake Cupcake – A decadent yellow cupcake topped with our light fluffy strawberry whipped topping. We add some strawberry filling in the center and garnish with yellow crumbs.

July – Chocolate Mousse Cupcake – A chocolate cupcake topped with our light whipped chocolate topping. We add fudge icing drizzles on each cupcake for a decadent treat.

August – Lemon Crumble Cupcake – A moist white cupcake with a swirl of delicious white buttercreme icing and a center of lemon filling. Topped with white crumbs for garnish. Delicious!

September – Cookies-n-Cream Cupcake – A chocolate cupcake iced in our white whipped topping. We add a generous topping of chocolate cookie crumbles to make this an all-time favorite.

October – Chocolate Mounds Cupcake – A moist chocolate cupcake with a swirl of our fudge icing and a center filled with our coconut filling. We drizzle this with fudge icing – a candy bar in cupcake form.

November – Boston Crème Cupcake – A yellow cupcake swirled with fudge icing with a Bavarian crème filled center. Garnished with a fudge drizzle. A cool-weather treat.

December – Chocolate Cream Cheese Cupcake – A delicious chocolate cupcake topped with our tasty cream cheese icing and garnished with chocolate cake crumbs. Perfect for parties.

January – Fudge Nut Supreme Cupcake – A moist delicious chocolate cupcake iced in a fudge icing. Garnished with pecans for a perfect marriage of flavors.

Shop the Sale: Ciabatta at home


Ciabatta artisan bread is a traditional Italian sandwich bread that has become popular the last few years in the United States.  

Ciabatta has a thin crust with a light, airy, moist interior. It’s frequently used for panini sandwiches, the classic Italian pressed sandwich, and it’s also a perfect bread to pair with hearty soups and pastas.  It’s also delicious just served warm, with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping; you may have enjoyed it this way at an Italian restaurant.

Often, however, you have to enjoy this bread in a restaurant or at a specialty bakery. It’s hard to make, even for experienced home bakers.

But now you can enjoy fresh, traditional ciabatta bread at home – even if you are not a master baker. Our Full Circle Ciabatta bread and rolls are ready for you to take home and bake in 10 minutes or less for home-baked goodness.

And this week, it’s on sale at Brookshire’s, along with several other favorites from our Full Circle line, so there’s no reason not to enjoy some fresh-baked bread.

Like all our Full Circle breads, our Ciabatta is all-natural with no trans fats. You can bake your ciabatta bread the day you bring it home, or freeze it for later use.

Shop the sale: Bake-at-home breads


Warm, fresh-from-the-oven bread is a sure way to turn an everyday meal into something special.

But who has time to bake their own bread, especially on a weeknight and with the holiday season right around the corner?

Our Tasty Bakery tear & share breads – on sale starting today – are the easy answer.  These breads are as good as you’d get in an upscale bakery or a specialty restaurant, but they’re designed for you to finish off in just minutes in your own oven.

Available in cheese and garlic & herb varieties, our tear & share breads come in their own disposable, bakeable tray, so you don’t even have a baking dish to wash. Just remove the wrapper and pop them in a hot oven for 8-10 minutes; then serve in a bread basket and let guests simply pull apart their portion at the table. They’re perfect alongside pasta, meat, fish or chicken.

You can also try our Tasty Bakery flat breads, available in garlic and herb, sweet tomato and cheese, and basil pesto. These are sold fully baked, but they’re best reheated for 8-10 minutes in a hot oven. Serve with soup or salad, make them into an Italian Panini with salami, ham and cheese, or even use them as personal pizza crusts. (The sweet tomato and cheese is especially good as a pizza.)

All these breads are all-natural, vegetarian-friendly, and contain no trans-fat. Just like you’d bake them yourself – if you only had a few extra hours in your day.



Product Talk: Baked Goodies for Special Diets


The problem with many bakery products produced for those on special diets – whether sugar-free or gluten-free – is that it’s often all too easy to taste what’s missing. The sugar, for one. Or the wheat flour that gives cakes and muffins their moist, delicate texture.

That’s why I’m so proud of the Tasty Bakery line of specialty loaf cakes, muffins and cakes that we introduced recently. Having tried them all, I can say these are so good, you’d be happy eating them even if you don’t have dietary concerns.

But for the growing number of people who have food sensitivities, allergies, or a need to cut down on their sugar intake, these goodies are an especially great find.

Take the no-sugar-added cookies, cakes and muffins. Fruit nectar, not artificial sweeteners, creates the sweet taste of goodies like blueberry muffins, apple loaf cake and oatmeal raisin cookie. Fruit nectar doesn’t deliver the “aftertaste” or off-taste you may have experienced eating some other no-sugar-added goods. And they are still lower in fat, calories and carbs than traditional recipes.

The sugar-free baked goods, like the loaf cake, are sweetened with lacticol, an ingredient made from milk sugar lactose. Lactitol does not raise blood glucose or insulin levels, so it’s considered a good sweetening alternative for diabetics. In addition, you may find lactitol easier to digest than other sugar-free sweeteners, which in some people cause stomach discomfort.

And the gluten-free items – like chocolate chip cookies, wild blueberry muffins and peanut butter cookies – are made without wheat or other gluten-containing ingredients, like malt flavoring or modified food starch with a wheat source. They are baked in a dedicated facility, so there’s no contamination by these allergens. However, again, if you didn’t know they didn’t contain wheat, you might not guess.

The Tasty Bakery line is also certified kosher. The last piece of good news? They come packaged in cute little gift boxes that make them a great take-along hostess gift or party offering. Or, of course, just a little present to yourself and your family.



Product Talk: Double Layer Cakes!


We continue to enjoy finding new and different flavors and styles of cakes to offer.  On that note, we recently launched three new unique varieties of double layer cakes.  Namely, they are Chocolate Marshmallow, S’mores Graham Cracker and Thin Mint.  How interesting is that!  While we may enjoy our many delicious ‘tried and true’ flavors such as carrot, chocolate, coconut and so forth, it’s a lot of fun to venture into something new and different.  The Graham Cracker cake features a unique graham cracker flavored layer with marshmallow buttercreme filling topped with graham crumb and chocolate garnish.  The Chocolate Marshmallow cake is a deliciously moist chocolate layer iced with sweet marshmallow buttercreme  and chocolate drizzle.  Finally, the Thin Mint cake is a deliciously moist chocolate layer with a refreshing mint buttercreme icing and abundant chocolate drizzle.

Product Talk: Tasty Bakery Butterfinger and Nestle Crunch Crème Cakes


With the Spring/Summer season here at last, we are introducing a fun new snack crème cake that will be great for cookouts, get-togethers – you name it.  We just launched our new Tasty Bakery Butterfinger and Tasty Bakery Nestle Crunch Crème Cakes!  The product names are of course eponymous with their candy bar counterparts and as such, are a wonderful snack cake to partner with a grilled hamburger or the like!  Our own in-house bakery plant has been working on these creations for about a year or so, and finished them just in time for spring. 

These crème cakes offer the same moist, flavorful attributes that you’ve come to expect from our regular crème cakes.  The big plus to these two offerings are the addition of the fantastic candy flavors from Nestle Chocolate Company!  It’s real easy to spot these in our bakery area thanks to the actual logo for each flavor placed prominently on the container.  We encourage you to give these new delicious crème cakes a try and let us know what you think!



Product Talk: Tear N’ Share breads


You might agree that there is nothing quite like fresh baked bread from your own oven – at home!  The difficult part is having the time to kneed, proof and bake bread – with ever demanding work and family schedules.  Good news – we’ve got a solution! 

We now carry two new breads, under our Tasty Bakery brand, that you take home and bake-off in your own oven!  We call them ‘Tear N’ Share’ breads.  Simply put, they come in a bakeable container that is placed in the oven for about ten minutes or so, and voila, you’ve got fresh baked bread.  Very cool (or actually hot!)

We have two varieties: Cheese Tear N’ Share, as well as Garlic Tear N’ Share. Regardless of which bread you choose, they are simply put – hard to stop eating (especially with a little bit of butter brushed on them as they come out of the oven!)

In addition, the line also includes several varieties of flat bread, which are par-baked and ready to enjoy.  Some of the new varieties of flat bread include: Basil Pesto, Cheese/Tomato, Garlic Herb, Tomato Asiago and even a pizza crust.  How much fun is that? 

You would probably agree that it’s a lot of fun to try different kinds of food!  We believe you will find this line both interesting and yes, fun.  Whether it’s ‘bake it at home’ or ‘building’ your own sandwich with the excellent meats and cheeses from our Deli, we believe that food can and should be entertaining and yes, nutritious at the same time.

Product Talk: Brookshire’s Best Honey Crisp Apple Pie!


We are very excited about the launch of our new Brookshire’s Best Honey Crisp Apple Pie!  This is a brand new pie for us this year and is ever so good!  The Honey Crisp apple harkens from an apple breeding program at the University of Minnesota according to the web site: www.honeycrisp.org.  The site notes that the “Honeycrisp was produced from a 1960 cross of Macoun and Honeygold,” which resulted in a “hardy cultivar with high fruit quality.”  This particular apple has a limited harvest season, which runs from about mid-September to mid-October in the “east central Minnesota area.”  What make these apples so enjoyable are their basic tenants, that being exceptionally crisp and juicy. 

For the holiday season, we will be offering this newly developed pie just in time for Thanksgiving.  It has a high percent of apples and just a little bit of slurry that combines for an absolutely sensational pie.  Please let us know what you think of our ‘best’ pie at askbrooke@brookshires.com.



Product Talk: Rudi’s Gluten Free bread


Have you tried our new Gluten-Free breads?  We recently launched a new line of Rudi’s Gluten-Free breads in our bakeries, which we believe rival or surpass any others on the market!  You no doubt recognize the name – Rudi’s – from Organic fame.  They opted to get into the Gluten-Free business and from what we’ve seen in the market place, their Gluten- Free line is second to none! 

Speaking of Gluten-Free, we now offer a Gluten-Free Cheesecake in a single serve format.  It is found in our bakery freezer case and is made by the folks at Chuckanut Bay in Washington State. 

Since we’re talking about interesting offerings such as gluten-free, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the excellent Organic breads that we carry from Rudi’s.  This is one of the best brands in the Organic marketplace and we carry eight (8) different varieties of breads as well as Rudi’s Organic Hamburger buns.  Interestingly enough, Organic products have held their own despite the difficult economic environment.  Baking Management Magazine (April 1, 2010) notes that, “Surprisingly, organic products continue to be a draw for consumers, despite the lingering effects of the recession. Sales of organic and all-natural products are expected to grow 20 percent during the next two years, according to market research firm Mintel.”

Product Talk: Fresh Baked Yeasty Rolls


With cool weather hopefully on the way – we’ve introduced a new product for the fall season – Fresh Baked Yeasty Rolls!  These rolls are fresh-baked in our stores and taste and smell oh, so good!  Most would agree that there is nothing quite as tempting as the fresh-baked rolls that mom used to make.  We bake these rolls fresh in our ovens and offer them in two sizes:  nine count – or in an eighteen count value pack. 

Regardless of which package size you opt for, these rolls will be a welcome treat for school lunch boxes, evening meals and certainly for the upcoming holiday season.  The nine-count roll comes in a bakeable tray, which lends itself to being warmed up in the micro-wave just before serving them. 

As these rolls become more popular we will be adding some additional varieties to make it fun.  We would appreciate hearing from you as to what varieties you would like to see us offer.  Just select AskBrooke on our website and send her an email.  She will relay that to us here in the bakery department.
