Product Talk: New fresh-made pizza

Another Monday. Back to work, back to school, back to trying to figure out what the heck to feed the family tonight.

Can’t help you with the first two, but I’ve got dinner tonight covered: Introducing our new, take-and-bake Colossal Pizzas.

In family-friendly cheese and pepperoni flavors, these new ready-to-bake pizzas are truly family-sized.

Each oversized pizza can serve up to 8 hungry people – for just $6.99!

These super-sized pizzas are hand-crafted in our store delis, with plenty of toppings on a traditional pan-style crust. (I describe it as a hybrid; it’s not quite as thick as a Chicago-style pan pizza, but thicker than a New York pie.) They bake up hot and fresh in your own oven in about 18-25 minutes. Or, plan ahead, and buy one today for a no-fuss dinner later in the week. (They also freeze well)

Today is the first day these new pizzas will be available in our delis; look for them in the refrigerated deli case in your neighborhood store. And starting Wednesday, you can get an extra-sweet dinner deal: Buy one Colossal Pizza, get a Digiorno Parmesan or Asiago cup for only 99 cents. (That’s a savings of $3.)

So, OK, it’s still Monday. But with dinner plans made, you have one less thing to worry about today.

Shop the Sale: New fish sandwich

What’s for lunch today? How about our brand-new fish sandwich? It’s on special this week at stores with full-serve and self-serve delis.

Just in time for Lent, which starts next month, we’ve introduced this ready-to-eat sandwich in our self-serve warmer, next to our chicken and pulled pork sandwiches.

Served on a soft warm sandwich bun, this is a filet of Alaskan pollock, a flaky, firm-bodied whitefish that is somewhat similar to cod, but tastes milder and more delicate.  The filets are coated with crispy panko bread crumbs, a style of Japanese bread crumb, which creates a crunchy crust that stays light and not greasy.

We make them fresh throughout the day, so they are ready when you are, whether for a quick lunch on the go, or to take home for dinner for the family. (Pick up some potato salad and cole slaw while you’re there, and dinner is done.)

This is a seasonal offering; we’ll only be making them through April. Starting today and for the next week, you can get 3 for $5 – so bring a friend or office buddy, and tell them lunch is on you.

Shop the Sale: Pita Pal Hummus

Our buy-one, get-one offer this week on Pita Pal hummus is really outstanding: You’ll be supporting a Texas company that makes its products from scratch. You’re getting a super deal. (Just $3.99 for the first container, and the second one I And, oh, yeah, this is terrific hummus, too.

Pita Pal hummus is so good because of the way they make the Mediterranean-style chickpea dip. They use all natural ingredients, and avoid genetically modified ingredients, monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial colors and artificial flavors.

Plus, the natural creaminess of this hummus comes primarily from tahini, a sauce/dressing made from ground sesame seeds. The only oil used is a small dollop of extra-virgin olive oil, placed on top of each carton as a natural garnish.

That means on average, Pita Pal hummus has less fat and calories than many other commercially prepared hummus spreads, and most other types of dip.

A two-tablespoon serving of the original flavor has 60 calories, two grams of fiber and three grams of fat. Let’s see your regular dip compare to that. (Actually, we’ll do it for you: A similar amount of sour-cream based onion dip has 100 calories, 7 grams of fat, just 1 gram of fiber, and more sodium, to boot.)

For this BOGO offer, you have five flavors to choose from: Original; Jalapeno Cilantro; Roasted Garlic: Sesame Pine Nut; and Spicy Red Pepper.

Serve your favorite flavor with pita bread, bagel chips, pita chips, or your favorite kind of chips or crackers. It’s also a good addition to wrap sandwiches, in place of mayonnaise or dressing.

One last note: As a Texan-owned company, creating its products in Houston, this company is part of the Go Texan program, run by the Texas Department of Agriculture. So you’ll be supporting a regional business that honors the agricultural traditions of the South.

Product Talk: Home-style tamales

For some families, getting together to make tamales for Christmas is as much of a tradition as stringing lights, putting up a tree and making cookies. Tamales are so labor-intensive, you just about need a whole set of cousins, sisters, grandchildren or friends to make the time fly and those corn-husk wrappers fill up quickly.

But if your family hasn’t found time this year for a tamale-making party – or if you’ve never developed the tradition but have always relied on buying someone else’s tamales – we have you covered. We have recently introduced some wonderful home-style tamales in our stores with delis, sold by the half-dozen so you can get enough for all your holiday get-togethers.

These are good-sized, meaty tamales, with a moist, traditional shell of masa around a flavorful filling, and all wrapped up in the classic corn husk. We have three varieties: Traditional shredded pork, shredded chicken, and a more modern, vegetarian-friendly variety, spinach and Monterrey jack cheese. They are made with lean, flavorful meat, so they are moist, but not greasy.

The tamales are already steamed and sold warm from our steam table or warmers that you will find in our deli area. You can eat them right away, or warm up at home, in your own steamer or even in the microwave.

The tamales also star in our holiday tamale dinner, new this year. It includes two dozen tamales, two pounds of charro beans, and two pounds of Spanish rice. This dinner will feed up to 8 diners, for an everyday price of just $29.99. This meal deal will be available through Christmas at selected stores, as supplies last.  Or, you can just pick up tamales on their own. Either way, this may be the year that you decide your annual tamale party doesn’t have to be about making tamales – just eating them.

Product Talk: New Charter Reserve deli meats

Coming this week to selected stores: Great new choices in deli meats.

We are introducing Charter Reserve, a line of premium deli meats, giving you 18 new flavors of deli turkey, ham, beef and chicken to try.

Charter Reserve is high-quality, all-natural meat – providing great taste at affordable prices. But even though it’s budget friendly, they do not skimp on the quality or the preparation:

  •  This is whole-muscle meat, with no binders or fillers.
  •  No MSG or trans fats.
  •  Every variety is gluten-free.
  •  They’re all oven-roasted, and seasoned with fine ingredients and spices.
  •  Several varieties are even certified by the American Heart Association, meaning they meet the association’s guidelines for heart-healthy food.

No matter your deli meat of choice, Charter Reserve probably offers it. The line includes seven kinds of turkey (including cracked pepper, mesquite roasted, and honey-baked) and five kinds of ham (brown sugar, Virginia ham and Black Forest among them.) It also includes four kinds of choice Angus beef and two flavors of roasted chicken.

Charter Reserve should be arriving in selected stores with delis this week. Don’t be shy – ask for a taste!

Product Talk: New cranberry – pecan chicken salad

If you like chicken salad – or actually, even if you don’t  – you need to try our new cranberry chicken salad, which has just arrived in all our stores with delis.

This new offering updates traditional chicken salad with a modern twist – the sweet-savory flavor that’s a big trend with restaurants and chefs these days.

This is no bland salad; it has tons of flavor. Made with tender, all-white chicken breast, the salad gets a burst of sweetness from chopped cranberries and just a bit of crushed pineapple, and texture and crunch from pecans. The creamy dressing, with just a hint of honey, brings it all together.

It’s fancy enough to serve to guests, especially if you put it on a croissant or on a bed of mixed greens, but familiar enough to make it a good choice for a regular lunch or a light supper for family.

You’ll find the cranberry chicken salad with our other salads in the chef case and in our self-serve deli sections, where it’s available pre-packaged in a 12-ounce container, so you can pick it up quickly when you’re on the run. Try some and see if it doesn’t change your mind about what makes a great chicken salad.

Shop the sale: Deli Deals

I think it must have been a working parent who came up with the idea of putting prepared-food deli sections in grocery stores.

Who else could so clearly see the beauty of having homemade-quality side dishes, salads, and even main courses available right where you’re doing your grocery shopping, to help with the workload of putting three meals on the table every day?

So when I’m coming up with our weekly Deli Deal of the Week, I try to think of things that will help solve that age-old dilemma of what’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner – and in a money-saving way.  That’s how we came up with this week’s deal:  Buy one pound or more of our bone-in or boneless wings, and you’ll get a one-pound Brookshire Brand salad free.

These meaty wings are just moderately spicy, so they can be enjoyed by even younger members of the family. The salads are all family favorites, including:

  • Southern mustard potato salad – chunky potato salad jazzed up with yellow mustard.
  • Coleslaw – a colorful mix of cabbage and carrots, in a mayonnaise-based dressing.
  • Gourmet macaroni salad – Just like mom used to make, with elbow macaroni  and diced veggies in a creamy dressing.
  • Original potato salad – the mayonnaise-dressed classic that goes with everything.

Add some French bread  (from our bakery, of course) and some fresh fruit, and you can call it a meal. Without messing up the kitchen or taking away from precious after-work family time.

Our deli deals change weekly – so check back every week to see what meal we can make easier for you.

Shop the Sale: Homemade potpies

School is back in session and afterschool sports schedules are picking up. So just getting dinner on the table these days can be a struggle – much less serving something that’s fresh, homemade, and doesn’t come in a paper bag from a drive-through.

Here’s my new favorite solution:  Our new hand-made potpies, made fresh in our store’s delis. They’re even on sale starting today!

You can buy our potpies hot and fresh, ready to serve right away. Or you can pick one up that’s baked but chilled, to take home and warm in your home oven at your convenience.

Either way, it’s a great one-dish dinnertime solution: classic, filling comfort food, with meat and vegetables all wrapped up in one pastry crust.

Each potpie serves one or two people, depending on their appetite. Try all kinds and let your family pick their favorite:

Classic Chicken: This is the classic potpie, with a flaky top and bottom crust holding white-meat chicken, potatoes, carrots, English peas, and creamy chicken broth.

Chicken Primavera: This unique dish has a definite Italian flair! Double-crust pie holds white meat chicken, penne pasta, julienned carrots and squash, all in a rich, creamy Alfredo sauce.

Southwest Chicken Bake: Stuffed with white-meat chicken, Mexican rice, pinto beans and whole-kernel corn, this one gets spiced up with a fresh-baked cornbread crust and sliced jalapenos.

Shop the Sale: House-Roasted Turkey

Our new house-roasted turkey is just what you’d make at home – if you had the time, the energy, and could bear to turn on your oven in this heat.

Now available at every Brookshire’s with a deli department, this turkey is roasted fresh right in the store.

We start with skin-on, whole-muscle turkey breasts. Our original, oven-browned version is minimally seasoned, so the flavor of the turkey really shines. For our Italian herb variety, we roll it before cooking in a custom-made blend of Italian herbs and spices, to give it a deep, aromatic flavor.

Then we slow-roast the turkey breasts in our ovens for more than two hours, until tender, juicy and flavorful. Finally, we slice it daily to your specifications, whether you’re planning to make sandwiches, use it to top a chef salad, or serve it to your family as a hearty main dish.

What’s important to me, aside from the great flavor, is what we don’t use. Just like a homemade bird, this turkey is prepared without any nitrates or nitrates, controversial preservatives that are common in many other commercial lunchmeats. (High consumption of nitrates and nitrites has been linked to some forms of cancer.) And we don’t use any weird artificial flavors or non-turkey additives. This turkey doesn’t need any of that stuff.

If you haven’t given it a try yet, here’s your chance: We’re offering it this week at $4.99 per pound, a $2-per-pound savings! And this Saturday, July 16, a number of Brookshire stores will be offering demos and free samples of this turkey. Check with your neighborhood store to see if they’re participating. And, of course, you can always ask for a sample of this, or any of our products, at your local deli counter. I’m pretty sure you’ll like what you taste.
