Shop the Sale: Favorite Holiday Pie

“What’s your favorite holiday pie?” We asked that question to our partners and friends on Facebook and sure enough, everyone had a passionate opinion. In third place, we had a tie between Buttermilk and Chocolate pie. Pecan pie took second place by the margin of a half slice, and for the top spot, the hands down winner was the classic, always delicious Pumpkin pie.

Since Pecan pie came in a close second, we thought we would give you a deal on pecans this week at Brookshire’s! Ellis Pecans – bits, halves or pieces, 6 oz bag – $3.49.

So no matter which pie you choose to bake, we’re sure there is someone in your family that will say it’s their favorite!

Family Matters: Hope’s Traditional Sugar Cookies

Tis the season for the holiday traditions to began. I love this time of the year – digging out all the ornaments that my kids have made over the years, baking my husband’s favorite pecan pie, going to the mall on Christmas Eve for pictures with Santa and decorating sugar cookies with my kids. Carrying out family traditions and creating new traditions for my family brings me so much joy.

My oldest holiday traditions began around the age of 10 when I started doing the baking for my mom. To this day, if I do not bring the decorated sugar cookies to the family gatherings, everyone gets really upset with me! For a while, even turkey shaped sugar cookies made an appearance on Thanksgiving! Happily, I have now passed this tradition down to my nine-year-old daughter!

Hope’s Traditional Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup Crisco

2 cups sugar

3 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp baking powder

2 Tbs milk

3 cups flour

Directions:

Cookies: Add Crisco, sugar, eggs, vanilla in a large mixing bowl and beat with a mixer until creamy. Stir in baking powder then gradually add flour and stir until blended together. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least up to three hours.

Lightly sprinkle an inverted cookie sheet and rolling pin with flour. Roll dough out onto an inverted cookie sheet. Press cookie cutter into dough and remove excess dough around cutter. Work excess cookie dough back into a ball and repeat process. Bake cookies for 8 minutes (they should not turn brown).

Icing: you can make your own Royal icing or use Betty Crocker Cookie Icing in a pouch.

What ever your tradition is during the Christmas season, remember that time spent with family is by far the best tradition of all. Share Meals. Share Life.

After the party, the leftovers make for a nice surprise in the kids’ lunchboxes. Pick up the November issue of Celebrate Cooking Magazine for a free offer from General Mills. Family Matters: Crock Pot Apple Butter

This past weekend I experienced the fall itch. It’s the desire to pull out the fall clothes, trade in my sandals for boots, and spend Sunday rooting for my favorite team (go Cowboys!) After going through the closets and pulling out all the fall decorations I moved into the kitchen to prepare the final stage of my home makeover. I wanted the house to smell of fall so I decided on a  Crock Pot Apple Butter recipe.
Now, I’ve had my share of apple butter but never thought of making it until I saw this recipe. It was so easy to make, no canning involved, and can be frozen for up to six months. I even put some in small jars to give as gifts.
Come celebrate all that’s great about apples at Brookshire’s Apple Festival, October 23-24. Your hometown store will be serving-up special events and sales. Stop by to sample apples, apple juice, apple muffins, apple butter, while the kids bob for — you guessed it, apples!
Crock Pot Apple Butter
Serves: 44
In a slow cooker, combine 7 cups applesauce, 3 cups sugar, 1 teaspoon cloves,
2 tablespoon cinnamon, and 2 tablespoon vinegar.
Cook on low for 5 – 6 hours.

Family Matters: BUSH’S Chili Magic Chili

Football season has officially arrived and if your family is like mine, we live and breath football, from early morning practices, to hometown games and Monday Night Football!

When watching the game on the big screen my boys want a real “man’s meal”. Their most requested “man’s meal” is Chili.

I use this simple recipe that scores me points every time!
BUSH’S Chili Magic Chili
Ingredients:
1 lb lean ground beef or turkey
1 cup onion, chopped
1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
1 (15.5 ounces) can BUSH’S Chili Magic Chili Starter, any style
shredded cheddar cheese
tortilla chips
Directions:
Sauté the onion until softened. Add ground beef or turkey and brown. Add diced tomatoes and BUSH’S Chili Magic Chili Starter. Stir, cover and simmer gently for 15 minutes. Serve garnished with cheddar cheese and tortilla chips.
