Family Matters: Puzzle Past Time


Every since I was a child I have received a puzzle for Christmas.  We would sit up a card table in the house, pour out the puzzle and each day you would see someone from the family sit for a few minutes to find a few pieces and then someone else would pass by and sit and before you knew it several of us were sitting, visiting and laughing as we were trying to find just the right piece.  Depending on the size of the puzzle it might take us a week or maybe even a month to finish but it never seemed to matter and no one got in a rush, I think because we all enjoyed the time together.  What an accomplishment we felt when it was finally done and we knew we had worked together as a family.  

Now with children of my own it is a nice tradition to keep going with my family.  There are a lot of unique and fun puzzles today and as simple as it sounds, just the extra few minutes with your kids makes a difference.  It is also a time for your kids to bond and share with each other without parents. Puzzles are inexpensive, mind challenging and are great family entertainment.  Remember as you search for just the right piece…you are making the right choice in spending quality time with your family.  Throw in some snacks from Brookshire’s and make it a fun past time for everyone!

Family Matters: Family Game Night


What better way to start off the holiday season than spending quality time together as a family.  Twice a month, pick a night to sit outside on the porch in the fresh air and play board games or card games as a family.  Let the kids each pick out a game or take turns each game night. 

You are guaranteed lots of laughter and joy as you try to out play each other or team up on other family members.  This makes for a great time of friendly competition and family togetherness.  Family game night is cheap and priceless when it comes to the difference it will make to your children. 

Eating meals together as a family is important, but also taking time to play games with your kids adds lots of fun, smiles and laughter and makes for great family memories.  You have to make time for what is really important – our kids and family.

Family Matters: Family Movie Nights


If you have kids, you know how expensive it is to go out to the movies and get popcorn and drinks.  Our family has special “movie nights” at home with everyone taking turns picking out the movies.  We have a family dinner and then we lounge in the comfort of our own home and watch one or more movies and eat popcorn.  This makes for great quality time with your kids and normally brings lots of laughter and joy in the house. 

Below is an easy recipe for White Chocolate Covered Popcorn that our family enjoys during our “movie nights”. 

White Chocolate Covered Popcorn

Ingredients:
4  (3.3 oz) bags of Food Club Butter Popcorn
1 (24 oz) pkg of Food Club Quick ‘n Easy White Bark
Wax Paper

Directions:

Cut recipe down – 1 bag of popcorn and 3 squares of white bark.  

Cook popcorn as directed and pour in large bowl.  Place white bark in microwave and melt as directed.  Take the melted bark and drizzle over the bowl of popcorn.  Stir occasionally to make sure it is mixed up good.  Pour contents of bowl on wax paper and let it sit for a few minutes.  Put the popcorn in several small bowls for your family and begin enjoying the sweet taste of perfection!  Suggestions:  Add chopped pecans or colored sugar sprinkles for the kids to make it more fun.

Family Matters: What’s for Supper


If your family is like ours, summer is always a busy time and finding a meal you can prepare while you are out doing other things is helpful and relieves the stress of figuring out “what’s for supper”.  

Below is an easy Crockpot meal that our family enjoys. 

 

Crockpot Pinto Beans

Ingredients:
1 – 2 lb Bag Food Club Dried Pinto Beans
1 – 16 oz Jar Food Club Thick & Chunky Salsa (Medium)
2 slices of Bacon (uncooked)
1 tsp. – Morton’s Natural Seasonings
1 tsp – Margarine
1/2 tsp – Salt

Directions:

Rinse beans; place in large bowl and fill with warm water until beans are completely covered.  Soak beans for approximately 6 hours and then pour in Crockpot.  Fill Crockpot with water until beans are covered; add jar of salsa, bacon and other ingredients.  Cook on high until beans are tender.  Suggestion:  Soak the beans overnight and put them on to cook in the morning and you will have supper ready to eat when you get home from work! 

The Food Club Thick & Chunky Salsa has bell peppers, onions, and spices that give the beans a great flavor.  Make a pan of cornbread to go with the beans and you have a meal. If you have any leftover beans just add ground meat or sausage the next day and then you have chili for another meal.

Family Matters: Meat Loaf


These days spending quality time with your family seems almost impossible.  Sunday for our family is the day we set aside by first worshiping together at church and then going home and enjoying a sit down lunch as a family. 

We visit, laugh and catch up on the happenings of the prior week.  A home with four kids gets pretty hectic at times, but just sitting down together for a meal brings things back to what is most important – our family. One of our favorite meals is homemade meat loaf, garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. 

Below are two easy recipes you can enjoy with your family. 

Meat Loaf

Ingredients:
5 lbs Ground Meat
1 1/2 pkgs/sleeve of Food Club Saltine Crackers
3 Eggs
1 (16 oz) Jar of Food Club Medium Salsa
Add little bit of Worcestershire Sauce
Sprinkle in Morton’s Natural Seasonings

Directions:
Mix these ingredients all together and put in a 9 X 12 pan and bake at 350 for approximately 45 – 55 minutes.

While the meatloaf is cooking take two cans of Kentucky Wonder Green Beans, add 2 Tbs of Virgin Olive Oil, 2 tsp of margarine and a touch of Morton’s Natural Seasonings. Cook on the stove top on medium heat while the meat loaf is cooking.  When you sit down to eat, you will think you are eating fresh green beans out of the garden.
