Inside the Store: Back to School

Where did our summer go? Getting to sleep in late every day?  What happened to enjoying a relaxing day at the lake or beside the pool with friends and family? Summer went by so fast.

Now everyone is back to school. Getting up early and rushing around to get the day started.  Remember to watch for those school zones. Please slow down to protect our children.

This year we have something new for “Back to School” that will make your day easier. We will be offering a variety of Deli School lunch boxes. These lunch boxes also tie with our NuVal scoring system.

We wanted to make sure that we are offering the convenience of having a premade lunch program that will be nutritious for kids of all ages. We will be offering three styles this year.

Peanut butter and jelly lunch box, Turkey lunch box and Ham Lunch box.

I can remember the days of waking up and realizing that we had not fixed our kids lunches. We are all running late due to trying to get those few extra minutes of sleep. Now you can just swing by any Brookshire store and pick up a lunch ready to go. You can count on this lunch box to be fresh and nutritional for your kids too.  By doing this is just another way we are trying to make your day better.

Inside the Store: NuVal

The NuVal system is going great in our stores. We invite everyone to look at our shelf labels and discover a whole new way to shop for nutrition. The NuVal system is a nutritional scoring system that puts all of the nutritional information and ingredients of an item into a complicated formula and produces a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the more nutritional value the item has.

I was really surprised at some of the scores from the items I eat on a regular basis.

The great thing about the NuVal system is that it will help you make better buying decisions. You do not have to give up what you eat, but the NuVal system lets you see the best item in the category . I still buy some of the lower scoring items that I really like, but I try to mix in some with higher scores.

Look at the chips: score on cheetos puffs is 6 while Cape Cod potato chips are 31. You can still eat chips; NuVal just lets you choose the right one for you.

Blue Diamond almonds will make a great nutritional snack while scoring 81.  Everyone is hunting for a way to snack in a healthier way. Soft drinks score from 1 on regular to 15 on some of the diets drinks.

Brownies are one of my favorite treats. You can choose from the frosted brownies at a score of 1 to the Walnut brownies with a score of 24.

When choosing the right rice, some of the rice scores around 8 while brown rice scores 82.  It’s all up to you and what you prefer.

These are just some of the examples that really stood out. We encourage you to stop by your favorite Brookshire store and really get involved in our NuVal system. Let your family and friends know about your new discovery. We can all enjoy a more nutritional way to shop and eat healthier.

Inside the Store: July

You know that July is here by how you determine the best parking spot. The best parking spot is determined by shade instead of distance. The July heat is in full swing.

Fact about July:

According to the Gregorian calendar, July is the seventh month. On the Roman calendar, it was the fifth month and it was called ‘Quintilis’, meaning ‘fifth’. Julius Caesar gave the month 31 days in 46 B.C. The Roman senate named it ‘Julius’ (July) in honor of Caesar.

During July, when there isn’t much rain, the grass often loses its greenness. Some flowers are abundant in July, because they strive in the heat. Also, insects are abundant as well – life is striving in July!

Be sure and check our floral departments for indoor or outdoor plants to bring beauty and life to your summer. We have staff members that can help you pick out the right plants for you and give you tips on how to take care of the plant you choose. The water lily is the flower for the month of July.

One of the biggest dilemmas in our summer cookout is controlling the insects. The pesky ants and flies being our challenge in making sure we can enjoy our outdoor activities. We suggest treating any area for ants before the cookout and to control the flies and mosquitoes. We offer many varieties to help control the pests in your life.

July is national Hot Dog month and according to the national hot dog and sausage council. Americans will be consuming the infamous little red tubes of “meat” in record numbers this summer.  The council estimates that over seven billion hot dogs will be eaten in America between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The July 4th weekend being the biggest hot dog event of the year.   How do you top off your hot dog?

My favorite is the Oscar Mayer premium Jalapeño and cheddar frank, topped with Food Club mustard, onions, home grown tomato slices and instead of relish, I use Mt. Olive diced Jalapeno peppers. I use tortillas instead of buns to cut back on the bread. Heat the tortillas up right on the grill and add a slice of cheese, wrap the hot dog and enjoy. My favorite summer time drink with hot dogs is our Red Diamond sweet tea. Great for taking to any picnic and we offer in sugar free, regular and decaf.

Top off your cookout with one of our Goldenbrook ice creams. The flavor of the month is Watermelon.

Inside the Store: Father’s Day

I am very excited about Father’s Day coming up on June 20th. We have a great selection to offer our customers looking for ways to make Father’s Day special.  Father’s Day has been a great weekend for cookouts over the years. We get to visit with friends and family members that we have not seen in a while. We get to share memories of our childhoods and create new memories. Some of my greatest memories are the times that I spent with my Dad when I was young, then the years of raising my own children and now I have the opportunity to create memories with my Grandkids.  The memories start off by planning a great cookout. One of my favorite recipes that have been passed down is sweet and spicy ribs.

I can always count on Brookshire’s to have the items I need to create a great cookout for my family and friends.

Bakery offers many styles of cakes and cookie cakes decorated specially for Father’s Day.  Our fresh baked breads go great with my ribs. Don’t forget to check out the pie selection!

Produce offers watermelon bowls filled with Dad’s favorite fruits.  A custom made fruit bowl is the centerpiece of our picnic table.  We have the freshest fruits of the season to top off any cookout.  Order a few days ahead and include all of your favorite fruits.

Market has a great cookout selection from seafood, ribs or any special cuts on beef or pork.  I always get one of our market staff to help me pick out the best baby back ribs for my sweet and spicy ribs.

To round out my meal, I pick up potato salad from our deli.

To make the day more special for my Dad, I pick up a gift card and greeting card from our wide selection.

I want to wish everyone a Happy Father’s Day
