NuVal is finally here! As you have seen in our stores, the nutritional scoring system that was developed by a scientific expert panel led by Dr. David Katz of Yale was officially launched in our stores on Wednesday, June 16th. NuVal puts all of the nutritional information and ingredients of an item into a very complicated formula and produces a score between 1 and 100. The higher the score, the more nutritional the item is for you. The score is located on the shelf tag in front of the item. In my last blog, I talked about blueberries. As I said, blueberries are in season now and make a great snack…..and they are very healthy! They are one of the few items that score 100!
One thing to remember – some categories may not seem to score very high. For example, cheese scores between 3 and 35 with an average of 21. You shouldn’t necessarily stop eating cheese; just choose one of the more healthy varieties. The two highest rated categories are fruits and vegetables, with an average rating of 96. I guess mom was right when she said I should eat all of my vegetables!
